GOTHENBURG SCHOOL RELOADED

The Swedish melodic death all-stars The Halo Effect have made a serious impact on the scene with their albums Days Of The Lost (2022) and March Of The Unheard (2025). Now they arrive at Z7 as the headliners of a first-class package. Joining them as special guests are Italian heavy goth alternative metal act Lacuna Coil and Finnish melodeath outfit Omnium Gatherum.

Originally launched in 2019 as a fun project among friends, The Halo Effect quickly became one of the most popular bands in the melodic death metal scene. Before forming the quintet, the members had already been active in renowned bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, playing a key role in shaping the legendary Gothenburg sound of the 1990s. With The Halo Effect, the musicians didn’t aim to reinvent the genre. As vocalist Mikael Stanne explains: “We didn’t want to invent anything new. We just wanted to play to our strengths and create music that feels good.” The result was the 2021 single “Shadowminds,” which quickly amassed millions of streams. Their debut album Days Of The Lost followed in 2022, earning a Swedish Grammy nomination and being promoted on tours with bands like Machine Head, Amon Amarth and Meshuggah. In addition, they won the Metal Hammer Award in the “Rising Stars” category in 2024. The rise of this all-star band has been rapid. “What I liked about our first album was that everything felt new again,” says Stanne, who had previously spent many years with Dark Tranquillity. “We didn’t really know what we wanted to do. It was just a lot of fun. But then suddenly you have to follow up an album that was named album of the year by Sweden’s biggest metal magazine. You start wondering: OK, how do we do this now?” The answer was quickly found: stay true to their roots while expanding their own vision. The result is March Of The Unheard, a triumphant follow-up that contains everything that made the debut such a breakthrough. Songs like “Detonate” and “What We Become” carry all the trademarks of the Gothenburg sound, with razor-sharp guitar riffs, energetic drumming and singalong choruses that have hooked generations of metalheads. Other highlights build on these foundations and push things even further. “Between Directions,” for example, adds orchestral strings that blend perfectly into the band’s dynamic sound. Proggy synths shimmer at the beginning of the opener “Conspire To Deceive,” “Our Channel To The Darkness” explodes from reflective acoustic guitars into a full-blown metal storm, and the instrumental “Coda” closes the album on a choral and symphonic note. March Of The Unheard is not just another masterpiece of Gothenburg melodeath – it proves that even 30 years after the genre’s breakthrough, these musicians still have plenty of fresh ideas to keep pushing it forward.
