RETRO ROCK MAGIC – DOUBLE FEATURE
Blues Pills & DeWolff: soulful blues rock from Sweden with a powerful female soul voice meets the raw seventies rock of Dutch outfit DeWolff. The co-headliner tour of these two live powerhouses promises a full night of pure retro energy.
Blues Pills:
From the very beginning, Sweden’s Blues Pills stood out from the big retro-rock wave. Instead of focusing primarily on Led Zeppelin or Black Sabbath influences like many of their peers, the quartet came across as more playful, more vibrant and far groovier than the competition. They create a rock’n’roll atmosphere that leads straight back to their musical ancestors: early Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin or Cactus. It’s hard to believe that these time travellers from Örebro are still relatively young musicians. The voice of singer Elin Larsson is often compared to Aretha Franklin or Janis Joplin. Together with fellow founding member Zack Anderson, she writes most of the band’s lyrics, tackling big themes such as the search for the soul, the meaning of life, as well as family and friendship. Blues Pills come across as deeply authentic, maintaining their love for everything that defined late-’60s San Francisco while preserving a strong identity of their own. With their current album Birthday, they once again reach for the stars with high-energy rockers and emotional ballads, achieving a new level of emotional depth. Birthday is a celebration of life and music – and you’re warmly invited to the party. Don’t miss the chance to witness how the band captivates the audience from the very first second with shimmering guitars, eruptive vocals, a warm, flowing bass and precise drumming.
DeWolff:
The Limburg-based trio DeWolff have fully committed themselves to the rock sound of the 1970s and celebrate another rousing retro-rock party on their current album Muscle Shoals. With this latest release, the hottest live act in the Netherlands returns to Switzerland. Formed in 2007, the trio have grown from teenage beginnings into a major force on the international vintage rock scene, driven by outstanding albums and passionate live performances. Starting out at a time when no trend guru was yet calling for “retro”, DeWolff can rightfully be considered pioneers of the scene. Musical brothers Luka (drums, vocals) and Pablo van de Poel (guitar, vocals), together with masterful Hammond organist Robin Piso, have long proven that they can both conquer the charts and tear down the biggest festival stages. In May 2024, they travelled to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to record their tenth album with Grammy-winning producer Ben Tanner (Alabama Shakes) in two legendary studios. At FAME Studios, Aretha Franklin became the Queen of Soul when she sat down at the piano to record “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)”; Arthur Conley, Wilson Pickett and Etta James also recorded there. Just over two miles up the road are the Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, where artists such as Cher, the Rolling Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bob Dylan worked, and where The Black Keys recorded their Grammy-winning album Brothers in 2010. Unsurprisingly, the new DeWolff album radiates the unique atmosphere of these historic locations. With Muscle Shoals, DeWolff revive the spirit of the seventies in every carefully crafted note and celebrate raw psychedelic Southern rock at the very highest level.
